Milk, Food Colouring and Dish Soap Experiment
A group of Senior I students performed the milk, food colouring and dish soap experiment during break. Together with Ms. Isabelle Farrugia and Ms. Emma Manara, they added some drops of food colouring to milk. Using a cotton bud, they then added a drop of dish soap to the food colouring. The food colouring was observed to spread out and swirl away. This is because the soap bonds with the fat component in the milk while the water component and food colouring spread rapidly away from the soap.
This experiment demonstrates why soap is used to clean away fat from dirty objects.
