Art Students Visit Valletta Exhibitions
On Friday 18th October, the Art Option students were taken on an outing to Valletta, where they visited four exhibitions taking place at three locations.
The first exhibition they visited was Paradise Lost by the artist Jade Zammit. Zammit, who is a past St Joseph student herself, met the groups at Palazzo de la Salle, where the exhibition was held, and guided them through it, discussing the theme of nostalgia and the observation of her surroundings which feature greatly in her work.
Following this, they visited the Malta Postal Museum, where Far From Somewhere, an exhibition on the theme of Mental Health, was held. This exhibition featured a number of contemporary artists, such as Ryan Falzon, Raffaella Zammit, Gabriel Lia, Victor Agius, amongst others.
The last stop was Spazju Kreattiv, where two exhibitions were held. The first one was by contemporary artist Iella (Daniela Attard), which tackled the topic of Migration. Titled Migration Nation, this extensive project and exhibition was a thought on the human impact of climate migration. Finally, the girls visited the retrospective exhibition titled ‘…the struggle seems to be eternal…’, which featured paintings, drawings and prints by modern master Alfred Chircop (1933-2015). Here they were privileged to be immersed within the modern artists’ work, along with other great works by notable contemporaries of his, such as Harry Alden, Victor Pasmore, and Antoine Camilleri.
Following these visits, the girls will now be developing the sketches and studies made during their outing, to create their own work based on the inspiration developed through their viewings of these works.
