Independent Living Skills Programme
On the 30th January 2024, as part of the Independent Living Skills Programme, the LSEs involved planned a session which would incorporate skills related to planning, shopping, budgeting, cooking, team work and responsibility. The LSEs, together with the students, searched for a simple cake recipe. A list of the ingredients was drawn up and then the LSEs together with their respective students went shopping from a nearby supermarket. Each item on the list was discussed with the students and they were also supported in locating the item within the supermarket and choosing the right product according to the most affordable price. Here, budgeting skills were targeted as the students calculated each price to be able to track their total spending. It was also crucial that students would keep strictly according to the ingredients written on the list, so that they learn not to buy unrelated items, ending up with unnecessary costs.
Once the students and LSEs returned to school, they proceeded with the process of baking the cake. The LSEs guided the students to wash their hands and utensils to ensure a good level of hygiene. They also helped the students by directing them on what steps they needed to follow. This activity also aimed to work towards having good teamwork and collaboration between the students as they took turns and praised each other. Lastly, the students also helped when it came to clearing and cleaning. This also teaches responsibility. All this process took up 3 lessons. The students were very proud of the end result.
