A Box A Day, A Year in Pixels for Well-Being
Thursday 26th November marked the last session of video presentations to the senior classes in connection with the school’s collaboration in an Erasmus+ Transnational Youth Initiative project under Key Action 2 with beneficiaries Dyslexic Teens Dialogue youth group.
The aim of this Erasmus+ project, Grant Agreement – 2019-3-MT01-KA205-074043, is to bring together 20 young people of different ages from Malta and Italy, together with 10 supporting adults from both countries to explore learning to learn in different contexts. The project aims to develop tools to support young people with their studies and their overall personal and social development using non-formal education methods.
The first tool to be developed as part of this project was the Year in Pixels grid for well-being which is featured in the school’s 2020/21 diary. The tool is presented over 4 pages together with information on emotional intelligence, a word bank of feelings and a list of support networks available to students and to young people in general. The team was supported by Ms. Nathalie Camilleri, our school’s PSCD teacher. The grid has also been produced in leaflet form in Maltese and English and is being translated into Italian by Dis…Correre youth group of Molfetta, Italy who are partners in this Erasmus+ project and supported this initiative.
Amy Cassar represented St. Joseph Senior school and she worked closely with 3 participants from the Erasmus+ Malta Team, Katrina Buhagiar, Keira Chetcuti and Maegan Friggieri, to develop the Year in Pixels tool. The grid is based on an idea by Camille @passioncarnets on Instagram. The tool is represented by a grid with squares for each day of the year. Each square is filled in with colour or doodles of one’s choice to represent feelings during the day. In filling in the grid one can reflect on the day and identify the predominant feeling/s over a long period of time. This enables students and young people to record their feelings and so seek support should there be the need to do so. The grid is currently being used in the school by the PSCD team as a tool for guiding students and for processing and support.
A video was produced to support the Year In Pixels project and as a way of reaching out to peers. The video was presented to all the classes of the Senior School over 4 days by Amy, Keira and Maegan together with Michaela Briffa, Roberta Ghigo and Emma Manicaro who are students of our school and also participants in this Erasmus+ project. The video may be accessed on the following link.
The Year in Pixels project was a very enriching experience for all. This is what some members of the team had to say about their experience while working together to develop this tool:
“During the Year in Pixels project I felt very happy and anxious because this was my first project ever and I wanted everything to go smoothly. I felt happy because it was going to help people and that is something I like to do.”
“I am really enjoying the project as it gives me the opportunity to voice my opinion”.
“I truly enjoyed working on this wonderful project and learnt that I’m capable of things that I never knew I could do! It was a lovely experience and I hope to do something similar (but not as good 🙂 as this) sometime in the near future!”
“The Year in Pixels was our first major team project with help from everyone in the group in some way, I would describe it as the main ice breaker for our group to come together”.
“I really enjoyed working with the team to create the Year in Pixels project for the school diary. It was a fun experience and something new and pleasant to do during the summer.”
