Sequins & Glitter Lose their Sparkle: Unexpected Sources of Microplastics
The last activity for the 2nd Term by the EkoSkola Outreach Committee was held on the 29th February during morning assembly. Committee member Amy Cassar, prepared a write up regarding the unlikely sources of micro plastics. She sourced her information from www.meghantelpner.com. The information she came up with was as informative as much as it was shocking. Her research informed the students of the damage caused by micro plastics found in ordinary and even fashionable everyday items. Her examples included cosmetics and personal care products, clothing such as yoga and active wear together with sequins, glitter and beads that we love so much and which have made a huge comeback!
Solutions? Yes of course, there are! Amy suggested various ways that we can reduce the presence of micro-plastics by being conscious of our impact on the planet and by limiting our purchases of new items which we know are impulsive buys or extra. She concluded her presentation by saying “It’s easy to place the blame on large corporations or government regulators, but the bottom line is it’s our demand as consumers that is leading the production of plastics and microplastics. Most micro plastics would be greatly reduced if we simply bought and used less stuff.”
